There are a variety of things that can cause this error, but you can fix most instances by updating your webcam's software through the "Device Manager" program that comes installed on your computer. If you recently updated your operating system for example, from Windows 7 to Windows 10your webcam might not work with your version of Windows at all.

If your webcam does prove to be incompatible, you'll need a new webcam that is compatible. Don't toss your old one away, though—there's always a possibility that Windows will update to include support for it. Make sure your webcam isn't obstructed. It seems obvious, but sometimes USB or built-in webcams can get smudged or have their light level detector covered by dust. Giving your webcam a quick inspection—and a wipe-down with a damp cloth, if necessary—can make a huge difference. This time every year, a bird builds a nest on my front porch light, lays eggs and has baby birds.

It's fun to see as I'm walking by but I want to put a camera on the nest. I would prefer a waterproof camera though that isn't a requirement. The nest is under the eve of the house so a camera would be protected from direct rain - but not indirect rain. So if I go the route of non-waterproof, it should be a cheap one so that I won't be out much once it dies.

I have a couple of Foscam cameras and one isn't even being used but it's a big camera and there isn't much space between the wall of the house and the nest - I don't want to scare them off.

I thought about a wildlife camera. And I have an old EyeFi card but I tried that card with a wildlife camera in the past and it had a weird effect. Even though the camera takes photos on motion, with the EyeFi card, it just snapped pictures continuously, motion or not.

I don't know if it'll do the same thing with the camera above - I guess I could try that and see what happens. I tried a GoPro knock-off that I bought from Amazon but even though the description says it can be used as a Webcam, their website says that feature is "coming soon" and I saw no way to use it as such.

But anyway - any recommendations on another bird-nest watching camera with Wifi? I might suggest you Google wireless IP cameras.

There are tonnes of them on the market. They generally have software to record detected motion and all that. Sure, you'd have to arrange for power, but it's a start. Most consumer routers don't offer POE. I have a couple IP cameras that I use and I could easily see repurposing one to do what you are intending. There are lots of outdoor solutions as well.

Right, I'm not at a loss for possible solutions. As I mentioned in my post, I have a spare IP camera - but it would probably be too big, too close, and too scary for the birds. My gut reaction is that I'll be paying money to install my telescreen? I have this slightly panicky feeling that my perception of what's acceptable sharing of private data is so disconnected from current popular sentiment that I'm becoming a bitter outsider.

I'm sure it's technically well executed as expected from Google management but I do hope it bombs as a product for to me obvious reasons. It even has a mic. Do we? Making it easier to setup one would be a good thing though. I found the software that came with my Synology NAS to be pretty easy to set up. All GUI, does motion detection and recording, etc.

Region of interest opencv python

The only real roadblock I could see for a tech-averse user would be having to buy the NAS enclosure and some hard drives, put it together, and make sure it's set up securely.

I think the big issue is that people say "oh cool, I can use this with my iPhone" and then just set up their camera, access it on their phone, and call it a day. They never set anything up or log in on their computer so they never see the "please change your password from the default" message you get on first access.

But yeah, a package with one or two IP cameras that work with both wifi and ethernet, a modest NAS already configured with hard drives, and basic security settings in place would be nice.

It's functionally a Dropcam. Dropcam's been around for several years now. You can believe that they're actually encrypting the video as they say they are, or not, I suppose, but there are plenty of non-cloud-based options available.

You trust them. You can do that. For me, this was the easiest way to get cameras up where I needed them Why did you need cameras? Apropos acceptable sharing of private data, I too felt the bile rise in response to this product announcement.

I think that the reason its happening, though, is because of a failure of OS producers to solve a couple of problems: one big one is that people just don't like having to maintain a filesystem - and more often than not, don't understand how to do it, either. Another problem is that the OS vendors are asleep at the wheel and have let parties such as Dropbox and so on basically eat their lunch on area's that should really, arguably, have been features of the personal computer operating system world.

Peer to peer should be a built-in feature by now.Video surveillance isn't just for governments. With a simple webcam, you too can keep a close eye on what's happening in your home or office.

Developerinabox's iSpy is an open-source application that lets you connect to a number of cameras and microphones, monitor them for movement and sound, and automatically start recording whenever something interesting is detected.

Although iSpy is free to use, some of its features such as remote viewing cost money. The free features provide plenty of functionality, though. Getting started is easy: All you need is a webcam placed wherever you want it to be and a USB cable long enough to connect it to your computer.

You can also use an IP camera connected to your network. You can then define specific areas of the image iSpy should watch for movement, and set a threshold value for the amount of motion that would trigger automatic recording. If you want, you can also name the camera, configure the capture frame rate, and more. Then, just minimize the iSpy window and let it monitor the camera feed. When you want to view the recordings, double-click the iSpy system tray icon, and up pops the window with a list of time-stamped thumbnails showing all of the clips the camera captured.

Double-clicking a thumbnail plays the clip—it couldn't be simpler, really. One area in which iSpy is lacking compared to competitor Vitamin D is search. Vitamin D has a custom search feature that lets you filter hundreds of captured clips down to a more manageable subset you can watch through.

On the other hand, Vitamin D's free version doesn't let you connect multiple cameras, while iSpy lets you connect as many as you want. In fact, iSpy also lets you connect microphones for audio recording, and even import a map of your premises and specify where the cameras and microphones are physically located. Still, even without opening such an account, iSpy feels robust and provides lots of utility.
